Urban/Industrial Wildfire Response for Urban Conflagration
The wildland-urban interface (WUI) presents a unique challenge because it blends elements of both structural and forest firefighting, requiring a specialized "urban conflagration" skill set. In traditional municipal firefighting, crews typically surround a single structure fire; however, in a WUI incident, the "fire is all around you," forcing firefighters to fundamentally shift their perspective and constantly look outward at the broader environment. These incidents are highly complex emergencies that can require massive responses of 60 to 600 firefighters and involve coordinating heavy machinery like bulldozers and helicopters.
