Why Some Homes Survive (Less Destruction) Homes that survive wildland fires typically benefit from extensive pre-incident preparation, specifically the creation of "defensible space" or "FireSmart zones" that prevent the fire from easily igniting the structure. Survival usually depends on the following factors: Non-Combustible Clearances:  Creating a 0 to 1.5-meter non-combustible zone around the home by removing flammable liquids, gas containers, door mats, and combustible furniture. Roof and Exterior Maintenance:  Clearing leaves, pine needles, and other debris from roofs and rain gutters, as well as covering vents to prevent embers from entering the home,. Vegetation Management:  Thinning and pruning vegetation, removing dead grass, and eliminating "ladder fuels" (low-hanging branches that can carry fire into tree crowns) within 10 to 30 meters of the structure,,. Urban/Industrial Wildfire Response for Urban Conflagration

The wildland-urban interface (WUI) presents a unique challenge because it blends elements of both structural and forest firefighting, requiring a specialized "urban conflagration" skill set. In traditional municipal firefighting, crews typically surround a single structure fire; however, in a WUI incident, the "fire is all around you," forcing firefighters to fundamentally shift their perspective and constantly look outward at the broader environment. These incidents are highly complex emergencies that can require massive responses of 60 to 600 firefighters and involve coordinating heavy machinery like bulldozers and helicopters. WUI environments introduce a specific set of "Watch Out" situations and hazards that complicate suppression efforts: Infrastructure limitations:  Firefighters frequently encounter poor access on narrow, one-way, or congested roads, bridge weight limits, and inadequate water supplies. Structure Size Up or Triage - Can we save it?

What is Structural Triage?  During a wildfire,  structural triage  is the rapid assessment process firefighters use to decide which homes can be safely and effectively defended. Because resources are limited and life safety is the top priority, firefighters categorize structures into a few main groups: Standalone / Not Threatened:  The property has a good "safety zone" and clear defensible space. It has very few tactical challenges and will likely survive the fire front with little to no active firefighter intervention. Defensible (Prep and Hold):  The home is threatened by the fire, but it has a safety zone. Firefighters can safely stay on-site to prep the structure and actively defend it as the fire passes. Non-Defensible (Prep and Leave / Rescue Driveby):  The property lacks a safety zone, is surrounded by heavy fuels, or has serious hazards. It is simply  too dangerous  for firefighters to stay.
